Once he has your measurements he carefully matches each piece of wood to make sure it looks good together and he hand planes the seat to ensure it is bilaterally symmetrical and comfortable. And you should be comfortable, you're about to have a dog pile of grandchildren on your lap.

Hal knows his chair is a bit pricey (starting at $7,500), but his reasoning is as sound as the chairs he makes, "YES [the chair is expensive] but ask yourself this question. ‘Of all of the things I have spent money on in the last 20 years, how many of them will ever be used by my great grandchildren??’ This chair will!” So I ask you - can you really put a price on the great memories you'll be making with your grandchildren?!

"The joints in this chair, there are six just like this, are quite complex and it takes time to make them perfectly. No chair leaves my shop without perfect joints as you can see below!"

"In order to fabricate one of these chairs I have to cut 262 separate pieces of wood. You can see from this photo how the headrest grain matches, the back braces match and so on. There are 27 pieces of wood in each rocker (the parts that touch the floor) which also match perfectly!"
