This Modular Boucle Accent Chair Combines Into Larger Seating Arrangements

Some chairs say, “Please sit down.” This one looks like it has already canceled your afternoon. The Poma modular accent chair is a pair of upholstered pebble shapes with a very persuasive argument against standing, and it comes from Kelly Wearstler’s collaboration with H&M Home. Your living room may have been missing a chair. It was almost certainly missing a small, domesticated boulder.

The useful part of this soft sculpture is its ability to work alone or join other seating units. Start with one Poma in a corner, or build a bigger arrangement with additional pieces. That gives the design a purpose beyond looking interesting in an otherwise suspiciously tidy room. Furniture that can change its arrangement has an advantage when your floor plan and your social plans refuse to agree.

Wearstler and H&M Home introduced the wider collection for a September 3, 2026 launch. Poma belongs to its modular furniture family, alongside the Soluna lounge chair. The idea is to furnish a room with pieces that can be rearranged instead of treating the first layout as a lifelong commitment. Anyone who has moved a sofa six inches, stared at it, and moved it back understands the appeal.

A chair with very few sharp opinions

Look at the silhouette and there is almost nothing to distract from the two big forms: a deep, rounded base and a smaller backrest. No tall arms interrupt the sides. No forest of decorative legs competes underneath. It is the sort of shape that makes nearby rectangular furniture look as though it has been taking work too seriously.

The beige bouclé adds plenty of visual activity without a printed pattern. Up close, the texture has small loops and darker flecks; from farther away, the chair reads as a quiet neutral shape. That is a nice combination for someone who wants an interesting chair without recruiting the entire room into a theme. You can appreciate a statement piece without wanting your home to become a statement paragraph.

H&M’s gallery shows the chair grouped with other rounded seating. Seeing several units together makes the modular idea easier to understand: the individual shapes still read clearly, but they form a larger lounging area. It looks informal, almost like a seating plan assembled from oversized river stones. The stones have apparently developed excellent taste in fabric.

For a room that already has a conventional sofa, one sculptural seat could provide a useful contrast. Pairing every object with an equally expressive neighbor risks turning a room into a furniture audition. Letting one unusual shape sit beside simpler pieces gives it some breathing room. That is a styling preference, of course, and your collection of extremely dramatic lamps may have other plans.

Plan the room before collecting the pebbles

The temptation with modular furniture is to imagine every possible arrangement at once. A better starting point is the arrangement you would actually use on a Tuesday. Think about the path to the door, the distance to a side table, and where a second person would put their feet. A clever seating system should still leave somewhere to walk.

• Use one unit as a separate reading or conversation seat.
• Consider multiple units when you want a larger lounging arrangement.
• Compare the low seat with your existing sofa before mixing heights.
• Mark the footprint on the floor before deciding how many pieces fit.

The height deserves particular attention. A chair can look perfectly ordinary in a photograph with no person beside it, then arrive with the approximate altitude of a determined housecat. Low seating changes how you enter and leave a chair, where your knees rest, and how comfortably you can reach a nearby table. Those are personal fit questions, not details to leave to the decorating gods.

That footprint is longer front to back than the chair’s simple shape might suggest. Measuring is especially useful in a small room, where a low back can make furniture look visually unobtrusive even when its base occupies substantial floor space. A strip of painter’s tape is considerably easier to reposition than a delivery box. It also rarely requires apologizing to a hallway.

Texture outside, a proper frame inside

The listed construction combines a poplar frame, polyurethane foam filling, and polyester upholstery. Poma arrives assembled. There is a welcome absence of that familiar furniture ritual in which two adults inspect a mysterious bracket and quietly reconsider their communication skills.

Its soft appearance should not be confused with a promise about how it feels to every person. Photos can show shape and texture; they cannot tell you whether a particular seat suits your back or your preferred lounging posture. If you favor a high, upright chair with somewhere to rest both elbows, this armless, low silhouette is a substantially different proposition.

Likewise, modular does not automatically mean every upholstered piece in your home becomes compatible. H&M specifically identifies other units in this collection, including Soluna, as options for larger arrangements. Treat that as the starting point. There is no need to recruit an unrelated ottoman and hope that mutual enthusiasm will solve the geometry.

The clean outline also puts the fabric on display. Before choosing any textured chair for a busy household, think about your usual maintenance routine and the manufacturer’s care instructions. The visual appeal of a pale, tactile surface is easy to understand. So is the existence of coffee, muddy paws, and people who insist they can safely eat salsa anywhere.

Who gets the best seat?

This feels particularly appealing for someone who enjoys changing a room’s layout and wants the furniture itself to contribute some personality. A chair that looks playful without wearing a novelty costume is harder to find than it should be. Poma gets there with proportion: two familiar cushion shapes enlarged and simplified until the whole thing looks faintly geological.

It would be easy to overdecorate around that idea. You probably do not need a pebble rug, a pebble lamp, and a bowl of actual pebbles explaining the theme. The chair can make its own joke. Leave enough space to see the outline, put a useful table within reach, and allow ordinary life to happen around it.
