This Massive Turtle-Shaped Floating City Can Hold 60,000 People

Most people will say it’s never too early to start thinking about retirement, and with some incredible places to live emerging in the 21st century, the adage has never been more true. In this day and age, you can even live out your golden years on a superyacht if you choose to, and one concept for a floating city might just be worth investing in if you’re the seafaring type.

The Pangeos turtle-shaped floating city from Lazzarini Design Studio is what the company calls a “terayacht,” basically encompassing a giant yacht with several hotels, apartments, shopping centers, parks and other amenities.

While it’s currently only a concept design, the designers hope to bring this floating tortoise city and terayacht to life by the mid-2030s.

The turtle-shaped floating city was given the name Pangeos after Pangea, or the Earth’s ancient supercontinent from which all land masses came.

The name is fitting, as it’s expected to be able to hold up to 60,000 residents and guests at once, comparable to a small- to medium-sized city.

The massive turtle shaped yacht can actually hold up to 60,000 guests at a time!

The design studio has created plans for the boat, and if built it would be the world’s largest boat ever made, hence the name “terayacht,” rather than the traditional superyacht.

The terayacht is planned to float around the world without a strict itinerary, though the design also includes ship and aircraft ports so guests can come and go freely, even when the giant boat isn’t docked near land.

Other superyachts are typically equipped with drag coefficient-reducing V shapes, though the shape of Pangeos plans to use special technology to help the boat cruise.

The odd shapes of the tortoise flippers on the boat are expected to use kinetic energy from the waters to help propel the boat at cruising speeds with zero emissions.

Additionally, the vessel will have solar panels on the rooftop areas to help generate power, and electric engines for use when kinetic energy levels are low.

The design of the floating tortoise city includes a central town square area, around which the homes, hotels and terraces are built. The boat would also include multiple beach clib and resort areas, rooftop gardens, malls villas and even an aircraft landing area.

The firm says constructing the massive floating city would cost at least $8 billion, and construction wouldn’t be set to begin until at least 2025, taking as many as eight years to build.

For now, the company is using a Metaverse version of the terayacht to help crowdfund the project, selling what it calls “Unreal Estate,” or NFTs of virtual boarding tickets, hotel rooms houses and more for use in a virtual version of the yacht set for virtual boarding in 2023.

The giant tortoise yacht’s design measures 1,800 feet long (550 meters) and 2,000 feet wide (610 meters) at the widest region of the boat, also making it the largest floating structure ever built.

In fact, building it would require a “terashipyard” as the designers put it, which the world would also need to create to build such a massive floating structure.

The terashipyard would need to be around 200 miles wide, 180 miles long, requiring a 0.4 square-mile dam around the project in the sea.

Once building was complete, the dam could be opened to flood the area entirely, essentially launching the boat into open waters. As for where it could be built, Lazzarini Designs has said that it could be constructed off the coast of Saudi Arabia.

Other excellent OddityMall floating city and superyacht features include this superyacht submarine combo, this triple-hull superyacht or the eco-friendly futuristic floating city.
While none of them are quite as elaborate as the turtle-shaped floating city terayacht, there are still some options out there.

Suffice it to say that we’d love to see this turtle-shaped yacht and floating city come to fruition. At the very earliest, the tortoise floating city would be completed by 2033, but it might be worth starting to plan for it now if you hope to live there, go there or support the project.
