This Scrunchable Floor Lamp Lets You Reshape Its Glowing Paper Shade

Most lamps arrive with a fairly firm opinion about their shape. You unpack them, put them in a corner, and spend the next decade accepting their decision. This scrunchable floor lamp offers a more collaborative arrangement: it provides the light, and you get to fuss with the wrinkles. Finally, a piece of home decor that considers your inability to leave things alone part of the design.

The Johnny Floor Light Two is Faye Toogood’s sculptural standing light with a crumpled Tyvek shade. It looks a little like a paper parcel that developed legs and decided to attend art school. Those slender, curved supports and ball feet give the big white form an unexpectedly delicate stance. There is something wonderfully odd about an object that can look both imposing and mildly startled.

This is the shorter of the collection’s two floor-light shapes. It still has plenty of presence, but its appeal isn’t simply being large. The surface is full of ridges, folds, and soft dents that catch your eye before you even reach for the switch. In a room full of smooth rectangles, Johnny is the person who showed up wearing linen and refused to iron.

A lampshade you are actually allowed to reshape

The clever bit is that the creases aren’t a shipping mishap. Owners are encouraged to scrunch and coax the outer layer, changing the silhouette and the way shadows gather across it. Think of it as a small decorating adjustment that doesn’t require moving the sofa, buying six cushions, or announcing that the entire living room needs a fresh start.

There is a satisfying reversal here. Usually, expensive-looking objects arrive with an invisible rule hovering above them: please admire without touching. This one makes touch part of the idea. That doesn’t turn it into a stress ball, and it certainly isn’t an invitation to wrestle the frame. It does make a wrinkle feel less like damage and more like a decision.

The unlit shade has a chalky, almost sculptural presence. Switch it on and the same folds read differently, with the seams and underlying structure becoming part of the illuminated surface. It is rather like getting two moods from one object: quiet paper sculpture during the day, glowing little monument to crumpling in the evening.

The useful details underneath the theatrics

Behind the expressive exterior is an ordinary requirement: a lamp still needs to work as a lamp. The specification sheet lists an integrated LED strip and driver, plus dimming. There isn’t a reason to invent an app, a voice assistant, or a complicated nightly ritual. Sometimes the most luxurious feature is simply not needing another account password.

As a decorating choice, it makes most sense where you can see the whole shape. Pushing the shade behind a towering bookcase would feel like hiring a magician and asking them to stand in the pantry. A living-room corner, a spacious landing, or an uncluttered sitting area gives the form a chance to do its thing. Those are placement ideas, of course, not a substitute for measuring your room.

That footprint deserves attention. A narrow-looking shade does not mean the feet occupy no space. Before giving Johnny a home beside a chair, check the walking route around it and where the cord will go. You want guests admiring the lamp, not performing an unplanned little hop every time they head for the kitchen.

Three finishes, one extremely wrinkled personality

The frame comes in charcoal, cream, or steel. Charcoal gives the pale shade a strong dark outline underneath, while cream reads more softly. Steel shows off the textured metal itself. The hand-worked surfaces suit the irregular shade: this is an object that would look slightly suspicious if every inch were perfectly uniform.

Look closely and the supports do a lot of visual work. They sweep outward instead of ending in a broad, anonymous disc. The ball feet add a slightly ceremonial air, as if this lamp has a minor hereditary title and expects to be introduced properly. It is a good example of a small detail making a big object feel like a character.

That personality will divide a room, which is arguably the point. If your ideal lamp is an invisible source of light that nobody mentions, Johnny is unlikely to cooperate. If you enjoy a sculptural object that gives visitors something to discuss besides traffic, the lumpy shade and improbable-looking legs have plenty to offer.

Part of a whole paper-light family

Johnny launched as a new lighting family at London Design Festival in September 2026. The collection includes table, floor, and pendant forms. The photograph below shows the broader family together, rather than a set included with this floor lamp. Floor Light Two is the shorter standing form on the right.

The family resemblance is obvious, but you don’t need to recreate an entire showroom to appreciate it. One wrinkled lamp can be plenty of conversation. Five might require everyone to sit down and acknowledge that the house is now hosting a very polite gathering of illuminated paper creatures.

Maintenance is more restrained than the appearance suggests. Switch the power off before cleaning, use a soft dry microfiber cloth, and avoid abrasive or liquid cleaners. The studio can discuss repair or refinishing after damage, with any service and cost agreed individually. Keep the original order details somewhere better than that drawer containing four obsolete chargers and a mystery key.
