Put the Original BTC Blossom Linear on a dinner table and see how long it takes somebody to look for the cord. The tall white column looks like a piece of glazed pottery somebody has thoughtfully set out beside the bread. Switch it on and light comes through the china itself. Now the guest across from you has two questions, and neither one is about the bread.

A little china lamp with room for dinner
The Blossom Linear is a rechargeable table lamp with a handmade bone china shade. Its name comes from plum blossom, which makes a little more sense when you look down at the top. From across the room you see a slim upright column. From above you can follow the soft outline of the petals around the rim. Those curves run all the way down the sides, giving light and shadow somewhere to go even in daylight.
The measurements explain why it works so well in the middle of a table. It stands 265 millimeters high, about ten and a half inches, while the base needs a circle just over four inches across. Think about how much territory a conventional table lamp claims once you account for the overhang of the shade. Here the china rises almost straight up from the foot. There is still somewhere to set the butter.

Original BTC offers satin brass and black bronze finishes for the base. The brass picks up the warm color of the lit shade, particularly against wood. Black bronze draws a little dark line beneath the pale ceramic. If the lamp will spend most of its life switched off on a sunny shelf, that little slice of metal is worth looking at in daylight before picking a finish.
How the pottery gets its stripes
The raised lines are part of the shape of the ceramic. Making them takes a mould and a mixture potters call slip. The makers pour the liquid mixture into the mould and allow a layer to set against its walls. Surplus slip goes back into the barrel for another pour. Imagine trying to make every flute run straight for the height of that shade, and the attention paid to the mould starts to make sense.

Once the unfired shade comes out, it air dries. There is still handwork to do before it sees a kiln. The makers use a sponge and trim away irregularities, then give the shape its first firing. Glazing and a second firing follow. The finished pieces go through final assembly in Witney, Oxfordshire. All that work goes into the very thing you see when you reach across the table for your glass.
The payoff comes at dusk. Light passes through the glazed bone china, and the fluting gives your eye a succession of brighter faces and softer edges to follow around the lamp. An integral LED supplies a warm 2700 K light. With the overhead lights down, you can see the effect over the whole height of the shade, including the bit nearest the base that is usually hidden by a book or the salt shaker.
Where a cordless lamp earns its place
- At dinner, put it where the platters leave a gap. The cable can stay at the charging spot while people pass dishes around it.
- On a narrow bedside table, leave the footprint clear beside your book. The low setting is handy for winding down while the rest of the room stays dim.
- On a sheltered patio, carry it out with the drinks and bring it back inside when you clear the table. Its IP44 rating covers splashes.

A cordless light also gives you a cheap way to settle a decorating argument, assuming you already own the lamp. Put it on the sideboard one evening and the small table beside the sofa the next. You get to judge the light in both spots before anybody starts moving furniture around in search of a socket. At 0.9 kilograms it weighs about two pounds, so changing your mind involves very little heavy lifting.
Three brightness levels and time for dessert
Runtime depends on which setting you choose. Original BTC gives approximate figures for each one, which is much more helpful than trying to plan a long evening around the biggest number on the box. Here is what a full charge buys you.
| Brightness setting | Approximate runtime | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| High | 7 hours | Early evening when there is still daylight to compete with |
| Medium | 11 hours | Dinner that runs into a long game of cards |
| Low | 20 hours | A background glow on a shelf or a quiet bedside table |
The USB-C charging port is tucked into the base. Allow about two and a half hours for a full charge. For a Saturday dinner that starts at seven, plugging it in while you prep in the afternoon gives you room to forget about it until the first guest arrives. Seven hours on high would take that dinner to two in the morning. At that point the lamp probably has more stamina than the host.

There are a couple of practical consequences to choosing pottery for a portable light. Give it a level place to stand, especially if a tablecloth hangs down within reach of small hands. Pick it up to move it when the dishes come out. The rating for splashes is useful around a patio table, but a ceramic lamp still deserves its own dry spot when someone decides the plants need watering.

The Blossom Linear at a glance
The UK price from Original BTC is £299 including VAT. The part of the purchase you see all day is the hand-finished shade. It is worth choosing a spot where you enjoy the lines in natural light as much as you enjoy the warm glow after dark. Otherwise an impressive amount of ceramic work is going to spend its afternoons behind a tissue box.
